Young children should be encouraged to develop familiarity with a variety of maps including orienteering maps, road maps, online maps and GPS systems, and, most importantly, paper maps. This familiarity with a broad range of maps will help them develop spatial skills as well as lead to navigation skills for orienteering and for life.
It helps if parents and caregivers use maps on a regular basis in the presence of the child. As the child gets to the age where they can start to understand what you are doing with them you can include them in discussions about the maps and how you are using the maps.
