Wears / carries their timing chip (SI finger stick, dibbler, epunch...) such that they have good control of it in opposite hand from the map. I.e. if they have a tendency to hold their map in their left hand they should have the timing chip in their right.
One common good way to carry an SI timing chip is strapped to the pointer finger and held on the side of the finger such that you can pinch it with your thumb to get good control of it as needed.
It is also a good idea to have a 'wrist-strap' attached to the chip and have it secure strapped to your wrist so you can't lose it if it gets pulled off of your finger in the woods.
